August: Marriage & Family

"The greatest work we will ever do will be within the walls of our home" - David O. McKay

This month we get to teach about Marriage and the Family. I remember when I taught the lessons from Come Follow Me last year to my 13/14 year olds. What struck me most, at the time, was how the principles of eternal marriage, families and temple work have become so foreign to the world we live in today. Thirty years ago, while on my mission, this topic was a great way to introduce people to the gospel: Marriage and family were familiar topics. But fast forward to 2015, and as I taught the Family Proclamation and other truths to my kids, it hit me how provincial, how out of step and (to some) even hostile our views appear to the world!

But, now I'm of the opinion that this is how it should be. And in some small way, this is actually a good thing because it further separates us from the world and illuminates our beliefs, no matter how unpopular, about traditional marriage and why this is central to Heavenly Father's plan. In effect, it makes us more visible to the elect who are looking for the truth.

August: Marriage and Family

The outlines in this unit will help the youth understand the importance of learning and teaching in a family setting. They will prepare to share with their families and others the eternal truths they are learning about the importance of marriage and family in Heavenly Father’s plan. They will also have opportunities to learn more about their own families, including their family history.
