March: The Atonement

"Ironically, during the moments when in agony he was benefiting billions upon billions of motals, He was attended by only a faithful few." (Neal A. Maxwell)

When I taught my class as a SS14 teacher in 2014/2015, I was astounded that there was no lesson on repentance. In fact, looking at the entire Come Follow Me curriculum, the word was only mentioned a few times. Perhaps we take it for granted that the youth have a good understanding already. We shouldn't. I am of the opinion that this is the month to make sure we imbue our students with the correct understanding of the Atonement and how repentance unlocks forgiveness and allows us to keep progressing.

My experience has been that too many youth think they are expected to be better than they are. It means when the inevitable happens (i.e. all have sinned and fallen short), they can sometimes become discouraged, withdrawn, and begin to carry their own burden around, for fear of disappointing their parents, their leaders, and yes ... their teachers. Let's give them the knowledge and tools needed to keep progressing and help them get through the most critical time in their lives!

March: The Atonement of Jesus Christ

“Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ” (Moroni 7:41).
The outlines in this unit will help the youth learn how to search the scriptures and words of the living prophets to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement. You will have the opportunity to help the youth gain stronger testimonies of the Atonement and more confidence in their ability to teach it to others. Encourage them to ask questions about what they are learning, to seek to learn more, and to share with others what they discover.

  1. Youth teachers ... March is almost complete. What new things did you teach the youth about the Atonement; How did you involve concepts of Grace, Repentance, Forgiveness and Love in your lessons? What great questions did you ask? What metaphors or examples did you use? Thanks for sharing with your fellow teachers
