Teaching with love
President Kimball teaching the gospel of selfless service, at the airport
President Kimball @ ORD
I love the story of President Kimball at Chicago O'Hare airport noticing a distressed mother and her child. It's worth another read. While this story is often told to demonstrate "selfless service", when I think of teaching our classes with love, this story comes to mind. Why?
- President Kimball was sensitive and discerning in midst of a noisy and crowded airport
- He was proactive and offered to help, knowing just what to do
- He made the mother in distress and her daughter feel loved and uplifted
- He did not focus on himself or even teach gospel directly; he just did what was needed in his humble way
The most difficult preparation
Let's face it, preparing and delivering the lesson is not the hardest part of being a teacher. If that's all we do, I submit that we have only done half our job. The other half is more demanding, is even more dependent on the Spirit, and in the end also requires skill and courage -- loving those in your charge.
This is not just for those teaching the Youth; it's for every teacher. What have you done in your class (or outside your class) to demonstrate your love for those you teach?
